Locating the source of this quotation is
been the subject of a long-standing bet, so if anyone knows a reward
may be available! I know of two Gladstone scholars who don't have a clue where
it comes from, or can guess at an obvious context in which it was
said. The quotation has gotten to be a bit of a cliche in
cemetery literature.
