While at Acxiom (see previous email from me) we manage the DMA's data as well as being members of the DMA and I was responsible for our systems that managed data for the TPS, MPS, Baby MPS and FPS. But I don't believe there were plans for an EPS (or email preference service) with any supporting regulations. Has anybody heard any different?

As someone who is just starting up a dotcom business which requires massive
promotion (nothing to do with Marketing Improvement, this is my "own thing")
I have looked at these routes carefully.

Now I am passionate about Permission Based Marketing, and that does help.
You see people are already reporting businesses such as the one I will
launch soon as spammers. And that destroys the ability to email from the
same domain, and actually gets people like SPEWS (See the MI Links page for
SPEWS and NANAE etc) to block the IP address of your dotcom.

The techniques I will use are viral marketing, with rewards for member get
member programmes, and a long loss leader period of no cost and then low
cost membership (it is a membership service). I will promote by
advertising, both paid advertising and to email groups where the moderator
gives me permission. There are no permission based lists available for the
end users who are my target market, and I know that direct mail promotions
for this service will not work.

Click thru banners I will not use, but I may consider click thru
skyscrapers.

This takes us back to classical marketing techniques embellished with as
many current techniques as are available.

Oh yes, I already prepared TICO's notification forms, so I will be about to
pay my "business tax" of £35 before I can start processing data!

MPS is made statutory, PECR is amended to include corporate subscribers in
the opt-in category, and the incredibly vague soft opt-in is repealed.

In short, all unsolicited direct marketing is outlawed (and everyone has
ticked the 'no third party' box)

A bright, intelligent entrepreneur starts up a business; think Peter Durand
(tin can), Frank Dyson (full suck vacuum), Alexander Baird (fax machine),
knowing that if people just got to hear about his/her invention, they would
not only 'just have to have one', but their lives would be genuinely
improved.

What options are available?

Broadcast media - too expensive for the start up business?
Viral - Anyone out there achieved this?
Word-of-mouth - Never get the business off the ground?
Hyde Park Corner - Looking more and more promising!
Perhaps a special 7pm TV slot to showcase new products an services (wait - I
now know what QVC is for!!)

Oh, and don't try phoning any companies to see if they will stock your new
product - they have all registered on Corporate TPS.

Could our (over?) legislative response to the "insidious Viagra SPAM
marketers" be inadvertently detrimental to the arrival of 'the good stuff'
in our lives?

Just a thought!
