This is a question dear to my own heart and I'm dying to hear of any experiences. To be clear, "identify theft" is when someone is able to steal enough identifying information about an individual to be able to obtain credit or open accounts in that person's name. This results in businesses being unable to recover payments or loans, and enormous expense of at least time for the individual whose identity is stolen to straighten out that it was not he or she who ran up these horrendous bills. In the US, the statistics are staggering, however, we have different credit policies which might account for the rampant numbers of theft. Does the data protection legislation in Europe help to alleviate and or minimize identity theft? What is the identity theft situation in the UK?
