Chaps,

What has always annoyed me is that a single parent who happens to have a
partner who is not (ethically) responsible for her (usually) children is
assumed to be dependent on him (usually) and therefore that the state (who,
let's face it, is picking up the tab for the absense of the other parent)
can reduce their financial commitment. To me this leaves her (usually) in
the position of a prostitute rather than an equal partner. The whole
benefits system makes me extremely uncomfortable. It is set up to force
people into dependency.
