Prior to 2002/58/EC they were a marvellous way to add NAMES and EMAIL ADDRESSES to a database that became increasingly poor because of it :) The difference between a contact and a prospective person interested in products and services is a huge one. As such the volume of data increases and the value decreases. It made an amusing exercise for a marketer who had the "more button" pressed and had no data budget. Currently I would suggest it was not valid.
