I think, either by good luck or by design, the JISCMail Archive seems either not to be a popular place for trawling for email addresses or seems to be un-bottable. More and more spam is to cloned addresses though. Your address doesn't; have to appear anywhere, it just has not to "bounce". It doesn't matter nowadays if you try to unsubscribe or not. Simple the passive act of receiving the email, even deleting unopened, will allow the spammers to know your address is valid. M$oft are as usual in stable door post absent equine mode with their image blocking. All that stops is people seeing who has opened their email or previewed it. And email "open rates" are a very poor statistics to report to anyone. -----Original Message----- From: This list is for those interested in Data Protection issues [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Antoinette Carter Sent: Monday, September 20, 2004 2:38 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: [data-protection] Direct Marketing Well, I've always been very cagey about revealing my "real" e-mail address ie. this one, which is in the format of [log in to unmask] On the Internet pages and elsewhere I use a generic mailbox which is in the format of dataprotection@myorganisation, and that's were I get my daily barrage of garbage. I use this e-mail address on the DP mailforum and get no junk e-mail (Touch wood! I'm sure it's only a matter of time....) so doubt if the list is to blame. The longer you use an e-mail address for, the more likely it is to be picked up by Trojan horse type viruses and end up on the more dubious mailing lists. Fortunately for me I changed jobs eighteen months ago, and have been very careful where I posted my new e-mail address since. But I suspect you've been using the same e-mail address for a number of years and I think this is one of the unfortunate side-effects of that..... -----Original Message----- From: This list is for those interested in Data Protection issues [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Broom, Doreen Sent: 20 September 2004 13:11 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: [data-protection] Direct Marketing ***** This email was sent via the INTERNET ***** All Am intrigued as I seem to be getting more and more of these medicinal e-mails, body part extensions and of course the wonder drug for golden oldies. I wondered if this was due to the fact that this list is public.....sorry, if I have missed something but think I am coming down with flu and brain not functioning too well today....it is a Monday after all.
