Yes, you're so right - as much as improved security can help to reduce fraudulent transactions, there will always remain that risk that someone may do what you say - chip technology wasn't introduced to prevent muggings. As no doubt you can appreciate - the human element is the weakest link and no matter what security is in place, some will always fall for the oldest trick in the book - as you so rightly pointed out - social engineering - isn't the world we live in wonderful ::))

Yes, but you can still mug the person and steal the card, use social
engineering to get it, or wait until renewal date and intercept the new
card in the post (or on the doormat of a shared house, etc).
