Perhaps we are not dealing with information that comprises personal data -
all the petitions I have signed are paper ones, and those loose sheets of
paper never find their way into structured manual files, either pre or post
the Durant decision .....

Just a thought......

I should be very surprised if there were a "fair collection notice". I
should also be very surprised if the petition were to have been started by
anyone registered as a Data Controller. To paraphrase Sarah-Jane's point,
petitions are from ad hoc groups of people wanting to make a point.

The fact that someone signs a petition in ignorance of the fact that it is
a public document is not something that the Data Protection Act can shield
them against.
