Road safety : Full support from the EU Member States for 
the eSafety Forum recommendations  (6 October 2004)

Enabling technologies for in-vehicle emergency calls (eCall), real-time traffic and travel information (RTTI), and human-machine interaction (HMI) were the priority topics debated at a high-level meeting of the eSafety Forum on 27 September. The eSafety forum, founded in 2003, is a joint industry-public sector initiative that promotes the development, deployment and use of "intelligent" vehicle safety systems, and monitors implementation of eSafety recommendations. It meets twice per year. This high-level meeting was attended by over 80 people, representing 18 EU Member States, one Associated State, industry associations, the eSafety Forum Working Groups and the European Commission.

IVth World Congress on Cyber-Law

The IV World Congress on Cyber-Law is organized as a follow-up to the previous world congresses held in Quito (Ecuador), Madrid (Spain) and Havana (Cuba). A vast array of areas will be covered : "Policies in the information society" (e-democracy and e-government), intellectual property and digital economy. "Human rights in the digital era" and "Society, Law, and Technology" will include data protection and privacy issues, access to the Net of priority groups, gender and new technologies, e-learning and Jobs in the digital era.

The Barcelona target to raise European R&D to 3% of GDP is an essential part of the Lisbon objective to make Europe the most competitive knowledge-based economy by 2010. The 3% Action Plan sets out requirements for Europe to gain a stronger public research base and to attract private investment in research and innovation. The conference will specifically address the potential of public-private interaction to realise the 3% objective. Sustainable collaboration between industry and science will enhance the exploitation of newly acquired knowledge for economic gain.
