*** NEWS ARTICLE IST 2004 Web Site launched - Calls for conference and 
exhibition ideas now open.  (27 April 2004) IST is the annual "networking" event and showcase covering research and development in information society technologies (IST). 
It is organised by the European Commission in cooperation with the Dutch Presidency of the European Union and will take place in The Hague (Netherlands) from 15-17 November.
Attendance is "a must" for researchers and industrialists planning to propose projects for the IST priority within the EU’s sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development.
The title of IST 2004 is : "Participate in your future", with "People" and "Economy" as the main themes. 
IST 2004 will include a conference, networking facilities, an exhibition of research results and the IST Prize Village. 
Two calls for conference and exhibition ideas are now open. Deadline: 17 May.

*** NEWS ARTICLE Research and Education Networks Achieve Major Step
Towards Closing the Mediterranean Digital Divide  (28 April 2004) The EUMEDCONNECT project, funded by the European Commission within the framework of the MEDA regional program, has installed a new high capacity link between Algiers and Madrid. This connects for the first time the Algerian National Research and Education networks (NRENs) to the GÉANT pan-European research network backbone.

*** NEWS ARTICLE 14 Pilot projects to boost knowledge economy in European 
regions 
 (27 April 2004) The European Commission has selected 14 pilot projects, to be allocated a total of €2.5 million, to boost the regional dimension of the knowledge economy. The projects were selected from a call for proposals published on August 1st, 2003. The "Regions for Knowledge" initiative (KnowREG) was called for by the European Parliament in order to encourage local players to design and shape regional knowledge development models. The models are to foster university involvement with the local economy and develop guidance for technology development paths, as well as awareness-raising actions. Projects will help improve regional research and innovation strategies, regional public-private partnerships, links between researchers, companies and financial institutions and networking between technological innovators across Europe's regions.

The workshop intends to attract IS researchers who are working in the areas of crisis planning, response and management, Emergency Response practitioners who use IS for their activities, and national and international policy makers. *** 5 - 6 May 2004 eHealth 2004 Conference Cork, Ireland The conference will primarily focus on the three themes of the call for the eEurope eHealth Awards : eHealth information tools and services for citizens ; eHealth administrative tools and services for citizens ; eHealth homecare and telemedicine tools and services for citizens.
The event will also provide an opportunity to take stock of the eHealth developments that have taken place since the Ministerial Declaration adopted during the first e-Health Conference in Brussels in May 2003. 

*** 13 May 2004 Creating a dynamic e-business environment - Benchmarking 
the best eBusiness policy initiatives in Europe Barcelona, Spain The workshop is addressed to policy makers and SME support organisations with practical experience in training and coaching SMEs in the e-business field. The goal is to discuss the policy challenges ahead and to better understand what the success factors to bring SMEs to e-business are, as well as how to efficiently accompany them in the adoption of e-business. 
The main objectives of the workshop are: 
-To discuss the articulation between e-business, innovation and entrepreneurship; 
-To identify good policy practices to accompany SMEs adopting e-business;
