Public services in the twenty-first century

Organised by Catalyst and the Barry Amiel and Norman Melburn Trust

Saturday 27 November, 9:30am - 5:30pm
City University, Northampton Square, London EC1

Places are filling up fast for this unique event bringing together trade
unions, user organisations, politicians and policy experts to explore
positive alternatives to the marketisation and privatisation of public
services. We are also now able to announce further details of the conference
programme, including several new speakers now confirmed:

  * a special KEYNOTE ADDRESS will be given by Colin Leys, Emeritus
Professor at Queen's University, Ontario, and author of "Market-Driven
Politics: Neoliberal Democracy and the Public Interest"

  * an agenda-setting OPENING PLENARY will bring together Douglas Alexander
MP, Phillip Cullum (National Consumer Council), Kevin Curran (GMB), Frank
Dobson MP, and Neal Lawson (Compass)

  * a full range of relevant TRADE UNIONS will also be represented by senior
figures including John Bangs (NUT), Jerry Bartlett (NASUWT), Kevin Curran
(GMB), Jack Dromey (TGWU), Billy Hayes (CWU), Karen Jennings (UNISON), Paul
Mackney (NATFHE), Mark Serwotka (PCS), and Heather Wakefield (UNISON)

  * the debate will also be joined by speakers from an exciting array of
campaigning USER ORGANISATIONS including Defend Council Housing, London
Health Emergency, the NHS Support Federation, the Socialist Educational
Association, the Socialist Health Alliance, and Telco

  * leading policy discussions will be speakers from cutting edge THINKTANKS
including the Association for Public Service Excellence, the Centre for
Public Services, the Democratic Health Network, the Local Government
Information Unit, the Office for Public Management, Public World, and the
Work Foundation.

  * there will also be a special session putting the public services debate
in an INTERNATIONAL CONTEXT featuring Wendy Caird (Public Services
International), David Price (Public Health Policy Unit, UCL) and Louise
Richards (War on Want).


We are expecting a large and lively participating audience and places are
