CALL FOR PAPERS

The 29th Annual Conference of the
Society for Caribbean Studies
University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK
Wednesday 29 June - Friday 1 July, 2005

The Society seeks one-page abstracts, accompanied by a one-page CV, by
January 7th 2005 for research papers on the Hispanic, Francophone, Dutch
and Anglo-Caribbean, and Caribbean disaporas.  Papers can address the
following themes, but we also welcome abstracts for papers, or full
panel proposals, that fall outside the list of topics below. Authors of
papers selected for the conference will be invited to give 20 minute
presentations of their papers and offered the opportunity to publish
their full papers on the society's web site.

PROVISIONAL PANELS

*       Children and childhood in the Caribbean, past and present
*       The sexual politics of Caribbean popular culture
*       Caribbean masculinities
*       Landscape and environment
*       Health and healing
*       Caribbean criminal justice
*       Democracy in crisis in the Caribbean?
*       The United States in the Caribbean
*       The Caribbean in the world economy
*       Comparative Caribbeanist research: A roundtable
*       Caribbean aesthetics
*       Visual culture
*       Amerindians in the Caribbean
*       Archives, museums, and public history
*       Memory, myth and narrative

The Society will provide a limited number of bursaries to postgraduate
presenters, which will contribute to registration and accommodation
costs, but not travel costs. Postgraduate presenters should indicate
that they are seeking a bursary when they submit their abstracts.   Arts
researchers/ practitioners living and working in the Caribbean are
eligible to apply for the Bridget Jones Travel Bursary, the deadline for
which is 15 December 2004.

Please send abstracts (one-page maximum, plus one-page CV), preferably
by email, to the Chair of the SCS, Diana Paton, with 'SCS abstract 2005'
in the subject line.  For more information on the Bridget Jones Travel
