Attached is the response Shiraz received from the Home Office re the closure of the CRE's library. Below are his comments. The CRE's publications, Connections, says the library is now only for its own staff's use. One idea to pursue might be for the library to be moved to some location which IS open to the public, as the CRE seems to have gone along with the closure.

Marika,

Yes do circulate it.

The point about not being used is interesting as it is generally used as an excuse for closing libraries.  What steps have they taken to ensure its stock is more relevant?  Have they publicised it among people?  Local authorities working on Equalities agenda are desperate for information – they do not even know CRE has/had a library.  Also: in this electronic age with govt emphasis on e-government, why has CRE not chosen to make its material available electronically, perhaps working with the British Library?

It appears that the decision has already been finalised.

Shiraz,

I wonder if this is true. Interesting that the CRE leaves it up to the Home Office to reply. The CRE is no longer in central London, is it? So could it be possible that the library is used less?

Shall I circulate it?

Marika
