At a meeting on February 16 called by Professor David Bates, head of the
Institute of Historical Research, it was decided that funding would be
sought for a year's pilot study to research documentary and other sources on
the presence of Aficans, Saracens, Tartars and Greeks in the UK in the
period 1100 to 1500. The idea was instigated by Marika Sherwood of BASA, who
received strong support from Elizabeth Hallam-Smith of the National
Archives.
