Apologies for cross-posting:
Hi all,

I'm trying to collect traditional songs on the theme of migration, for
inclusion on www.movinghere.org.uk, a website about the history of
migration to England from all over the world.

Many cultures have songs about the sorrow (or sometimes the excitement) of
leaving homeland and family, the experience of building a new life in a new
place, and the longing for the places and people you left behind. Music is
always a powerful way of recording experiences and feelings; and many of
these songs express truths about the experience of migrating with an
immediacy and clarity that the history books can never achieve..!

At the moment, the ones I know well are mostly Irish ones, like 'It's a
Long Way from Clare to Here' and 'The Reason I Left Mullingar', but I'd
like to learn some from other countries, cultures and languages. In the
end, I'm hoping to be able to make a few recordings of people singing such
songs, and add them to the Moving Here website, www.movinghere.org.uk.

So, I would love to hear from anyone who:
a) knows a song like this (especially if they'd be prepared to sing it and
be recorded for inclusion on the site) or
b) knows of any community group or organisation whose members might know
songs like this (especially if they like singing!)
