Ushering in contemporary discourse: Mary Wollstonecraft
Under the Editorship of Frank Runcie and Julie Beaulieu
In her short life, the author of the Vindications achieved unprecedented
notoriety for a woman in
public life. She wrote fiction and travel journals, translated, edited a reader,
and perhaps most
notably for posterity, wrote both A Vindication of the Rights of Man, and A
Vindications of the
Rights of Women, in doing so critiquing the thought of contemporary philosophers
Edmund Burke and
Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
She was a lone early voice for both gender equality and the abolition of
slavery. While
Wollstonecraft was in many respects an avant-garde figure, her portrayal of
Muslims and Southern
European cultures may today elicit other readings. In this light, we welcome
discussions of her
influence and her relevance in current social critique.
For its 5th (Fall 2004) publication, Post-Scriptum.ORG issues a call for papers
on the life and
thought of Mary Wollstonecraft. In view of the Wollstonecraft’s wide interests
and fields of
activity, we would encourage contributions on any of the following aspects of
her life and work:
-Aesthetics (e.g. critique of the sublime)
-(Auto) biography/travel writing
-Social and political critique
-Translation and editorship
-Fiction
We welcome new and interdisciplinary approaches to her work (for example
post-colonial revisionist
re-readings) and will consider contributions in English, French, German and
Spanish.
Deadlines: June 1st 2004 (brief proposition); September 1st (final 4500 word
article)

Malgré une période d’activité relativement courte, Mary Wollstonecraft a su
atteindre une
reconnaissance publique sans précédent pour une femme de l’Angleterre du XVIIIe
siècle. Auteure
d’œuvres de fiction et de journaux de voyage, elle a également traduit et édité
une anthologie.
Fait plus important encore pour la postérité, elle a écrit A Vindication for the
Rights of Man et
A Vindication for the Rights of Women, où elle critiquait la pensée des
philosophes contemporains
Edmund Burke et Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
Elle fut en outre la première et seule voix à se prononcer pour l’égalité des
droits et
l’abolition de l’esclavage. Aussi Wollstonecraft fut-elle à bien des égards une
figure
d’avant-garde, dont l’actualité (manifeste ou fantomatique) mérite d’être
examinée aujourd’hui, ne
serait-ce que pour les lectures nouvelles que peut susciter son portrait des
cultures musulmanes
et de l’Europe méridionale.
Pour son 5e numéro (automne 2004), la revue Post-Scriptum.ORG souhaite publier
des articles
portant sur la vie et les réflexions de Mary Wollstonecraft, ainsi que sur la
contemporanéité de
sa pensée dans le discours critique du XXe siècle. Compte tenu du vaste champ
d’intérêt et de
recherche qui l’entoure, nous encourageons toute contribution portant sur les
aspects suivants de
sa vie, son œuvre et sa fortune littéraire :
- l’esthétique (ex : la critique du sublime)
- (auto)biographie/journaux de voyage
- critique sociopolitique
- traduction et édition
- fiction
Nous accepterons des approches récentes et interdisciplinaires de son œuvre (par
exemple les
lectures postcoloniales et révisionnistes) et prendrons en considération les
articles en français,
en anglais, en allemand et en espagnol.
