London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) is pleased to announce our new online
education resource - The LMA 'Learning Zone'
www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/learningzone

The Learning Zone highlights some key aspects of LMA's collections and
work, and presents both documents and data in a way that is accessible to
school children, life long learners and those in further and higher
education.

Learning Zone includes 'Data Online', where LMA showcases the major
findings of the project Black and Asian Londoners: Presence and Background
1536-1840. Users of Data Online can now search by name, date, place of
baptism, place of origin or address in a database of entries relating to
Black and Asian people in Anglican baptism registers for London and
Middlesex. Data Online not only lets you search for information, but also
see a digital copy of the entry you choose. Data Online gives information
about the project so that you can understand where the data has been
found, and gives the project parameters. We hope that this resource will
be extremely useful to pre- and post-16 education alike, as well as to the
interested individual researcher.

Learning Zone makes use of the stories found in the Black and Asian
Londoners project in 'SchooLMAte', the section of Learning Zone designed
for schools. There are maps, stories, images, documents, timelines, audio
resources and weblinks to useful alternative websites. SchooLMAte
presently focuses on some aspects of the history of Black and Asian,
French, and Irish communities in London. The resources available on
SchooLMAte are suitable for Key Stages 2 and 3.

Learning Zone is a new web resource, and it is currently in a review and
development phase. In terms of future development, the Corporation of
London Records Office will be contributing material to a new 'City
Communities' section later this year. LMA will be creating a new 'LMA Map
Zone' to give a topographical look at five central London Boroughs. There
will also be a greatly expanded section on 'Archive Work' which will
highlight some of the jobs undertaken at LMA, helping to present an
appealing face of the archive sector to young people considering future
careers.

In order to help us improve this exciting new resource, please take a look
at the Learning Zone and give us your thoughts via the feedback form.
