Senior Lecturer in Medical Statistics

Department of Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine
United Kingdom Children's Cancer Study Group (UKCCSG)

School of Medicine

£37,558 to £42,573 pa
Available until 31 December 2009

Ref: A1532

Highly motivated applicants with a proven track record in research and clinical trials, are sought to provide leadership in the statistical and clinical trial activity of the UKCCSG.

The UKCCSG is a recognised leader in the conduct of clinical trials and other studies in paediatric oncology. These range from laboratory based studies, early dose finding and efficacy studies (Phase I and Phase II) to randomised multi-centre and international controlled trials (Phase III).

This is an exciting new post, designed to expand the statistical team and provide leadership for the statistical and clinical trial activity of the UKCCSG. The statistical work includes a wide-range of activities with particular responsibility for design, monitoring, conduct, and analysis of trials and preparation of reports for their timely publication in leading medical journals. This will involve working closely with (on a trial-by-trial or cancer-type basis) a multidisciplinary team, including statisticians, information technology and data management experts, as well as clinicians, to ensure the trial is conducted to the highest international standards. Clinical trials activity is now the subject of increasing regulation, particularly Good Clinical Practice and the forthcoming EU Directive on GCP in Clinical Trials. It is essential that the postholder works closely with all members of the Data Centre to ensure compliance.

A recent review of UKCCSG clinical trial structure has resulted in the establishment of a Clinical Trial Review Group (of which the Senior Statistician will be a member) and formal Clinical Trial Teams (lead clinician, statistician and trial co-ordinator). Because of the international nature of the work of the UKCCSG, there will be a need for travel within the UK, the EU and, on occasion, further afield.
