ESRC NATIONAL CENTRE FOR e-SOCIAL SCIENCE CENTRE DIRECTOR (REF 019/04)

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic Director of the new ESRC-funded
National Centre for e-Social Science (NCeSS). The Centre will have a
distributed structure, comprising a co-ordinating Hub based at the
University of Manchester and a set of research-based Nodes distributed
across the UK. The Hub has been granted an initial three-year budget of
£1.5 million from 1 April 2004. It draws on staff from several academic
departments and the computing service at Manchester and the
UK Data Archive at the University of Essex.

In addition to the Director, the Hub will be
recruiting a Programme Manager, Computer Support Officer, Administrator,
Secretary and four post-doctoral Research Assistants at Manchester and
three part-time Research Assistants at Essex. The Nodes will be
commissioned in 2004 and begin work in April 2005.

Applicants will have the capacity to promote the NCeSS as the central
resource base for e-social science issues and activities in the UK,
    and to undertake outreach activities that stimulate the uptake of
    e-Social Science and Grid technology across the UK social science
community. In order to make a success of these activities, you will have
    excellent communication and networking skills, and a successful track
    record of disseminating technical innovations.
You will need to articulate the work of the NCeSS
with the UK Research Councils' e-Science Core Programme, to liaise
effectively with other relevant ESRC Programmes especially in the
area of research methods, and to establish relationships with relevant
    user groups in the public and private sectors. Substantial relevant
    experience will have been accumulated in an academic, public or
private sector environment.

Salary by negotiation but not less than £40,655 per annum (under review).

The post is tenable from 1 April 2004, for three years in the first
instance. Secondment from the applicant's current post will be considered.
