The course aims to provide a grounding in epidemiological study designs and
measures of disease risk used in aetiological epidemiology and health
services research. Participants will gain practical experience in study
design and the appraisal of the epidemiological literature.

The course is designed for clinicians, researchers, public health
specialists and other health care professionals who have only a basic
understanding of epidemiology. Prior knowledge of basic medical statistics
(hypothesis testing and confidence intervals) is important. No prior
knowledge of Stata is required.

Topics to be covered include: measures of disease occurrence - incidence,
prevalence, risk, rates, odds; measures of exposure effect - Odds ratios
and relative risk; standardised mortality ratios; study design -
descriptive, analytical and experimental methods (to cover case series,
cross sectional, ecological, case control, cohort studies and intervention
studies); bias, confounding, interactions and causality; sample size and
power calculations; "Past, present and future of epidemiology" &
"Epidemiology and Public Health Policy"; an opportunity for participants to
present their own planned research or research in-progress. There will also
be at least one departmental seminar during the week which participants are
encouraged to attend.
