Senior Statistician, National Patient Safety Agency Circa £55,000 plus benefits. The NPSA is a Special Health Authority created in July 2001 to co-ordinate the efforts of the entire country to report on and, more importantly, to learn from mistakes and problems that affect patient safety. As well as making sure patient safety incidents are reported in the first place, the NPSA is trying to promote an open and fair culture in the NHS, encouraging all healthcare staff to report incidents without undue fear of personal reprimand. It will then collect reports from throughout the country and initiate preventative measures, so that the whole country can learn from each case, and patient safety throughout the NHS can be improved. The Senior Statistician will lead a team of statisticians and analysts developing the NPSA's ability to analyse and aggregate summaries of data collected on patient safety incidents, from a wide range of sources, and will deputise for the Head of Knowledge and Information Management as required. The postholder will report to the NPSA Director of Epidemiology and Research, Professor Richard Thomson, and to the Head of Knowledge and Information Management, Clive Flashman and will support the development of a "Patient Safety Observatory" which will draw on a wide range of data sources to understand and act upon patient safety intelligence. The analysis of information is likely to attract considerable public and political attention and so to take on this fascinating role, experience of working in a high profile field is essential. You may not have worked in the NHS, but you will need experience of working with colleagues in health organisations in the UK or overseas. Not only will you have first class technical skills, but also first class interpersonal skills, able to influence, negotiate and deliver exceptional results through others who may not be in a line management relationship. The NPSA is based in the West End of London, within easy reach of all mainline stations. It is an organisation that is enthusiastic and keen to make a difference.
