Centre for Applied Social Surveys
Short Course

Graphical Methods for Survey Data

Supported by the ESRC

David Bellhouse, University of Western Ontario

6-7 May 2004
University of Southampton

CASS is an ESRC Resource Centre hosted by
the National Centre for Social Research, the University of
Southampton and
the University of Surrey

Course Objectives:

" In many courses on data analysis, the first thing we are told to do
is to plot the data to get a better understanding of it before
proceeding to more formal analyses. One objective of the course is to
introduce plotting methodology in the context of large complex
surveys and in the presence of survey weights.

" Smoothing is now a widely used statistical tool. A second objective
of the course is to introduce smoothing techniques applicable to
complex survey data analysis.

Course Content:

" Simple graphs such as boxplots, histograms and scatterplots.

" Checking the effect of the surveys weights through Q-Q plots

" Density estimation - smoothing histograms

" Quantile estimation through density estimates

" Local polynomial regression - smoothing scatterplots

" Additive models - advanced scatterplot smoothing

Target Audience:

The course is aimed at data analysts and their supervisors who work
with survey datasets.

Pre-requisite:

An introductory course in survey sampling. It is assumed that
participants will be familiar with survey designs, estimation
procedures including domain estimation, and methods of variance
estimation for surveys.

Course Materials:

A booklet of the PowerPoint slides used during the workshop will be
provided.

The Instructor:

David Bellhouse is Professor of Statistics at the University of
Western Ontario, Canada and has taught many courses in survey
sampling, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels. He has been
a consultant to various law firms providing advice and expert
testimony on cases involving sampling issues. Currently, he is
serving on the Advisory Committee for Statistical Methods at
Statistics Canada and is an associate editor for Survey Methodology.
A former President of the Statistical Society of Canada, he has been
active in this Society in a number of capacities and was recently
given the Society's Service Award.

Fee:

£300 (includes course materials, lunches and morning and afternoon
tea). Because of ESRC support, a number of bursaries are available
which reduce the fee to £65 - applicants must be full-time students,
UK academic staff or ESRC-funded researchers.

Location:

The course will be held at the University of Southampton. During the
course participants can be contacted via the Southampton Statistical
Sciences Research Institute (Tel: 023 8059 3048, Fax: 023 8059 3846).

Duration:

The course will begin with coffee and registration at 09.30 a.m. on 6
May, and end at 4.30 pm on 7 May 2004.
