CISHE in conjunction with the Cardiff School of Social Sciences is pleased to
offer a 3 year fully funded MRC studentship to start 1st October 2004.

Below are a number of project ideas which are suggested for this studentship.

Suggested projects:
-Combining qualitative process evaluation with quantitative data from cluster
randomised trials of complex interventions
-Using social network analysis to disentangle the relative influence of peer
pressure and selection on the uptake of smoking among adolescents
-Promoting healthy eating in children. Can rewards be effective?
-Ethical issues in cluster randomised trials
-Self-Monitoring and Drug Administration at Home by People with Cardiac
Conditions: Expertise, Organisation, Economics, Identity, Advocacy
-Increasing Healthy Eating: Effects of Self-Control Training and Rewards on Food
Choice
-Physical, psychosocial, and environmental factors associated with entry to long
term care in the frail elderly
-Who seeks medical help and why?
-The role of schools in promoting physical activity and exercise

The Cardiff Institute of Society, Health and Ethics (CISHE) is a new
collaborative venture between Cardiff University Schools of Social Sciences and
Law, and the Department of General Practice. CISHE conducts and co-ordinates
methodologically innovative multidisciplinary research, with a strong
contribution from the social sciences and within the related domains of
biomedicine, health services, public health and bioethics.
We undertake and facilitate research of international excellence, placing
emphasis on tackling health inequalities and ensuring that our research has an
impact on policy and practice in Wales and beyond.
