The third meeting of the session for the RSS Avon local group will take place next Thursday, 22nd January at 4:00pm. The talk has a bioinformatics theme, so please pass these details on to anyone in the life sciences who you think might be interested. Venue: Room SM4, Mathematics department, University of Bristol Title: Improved Plaid Model Clustering Speaker: Heather Turner, Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Exeter Abstract: This talk introduces a range of improvements to the plaid model, a two-way clustering method developed for analysing gene expression data. The first part of the talk will cover an alternative method of fitting the plaid model, which is then tested against the original method on simulated microarray data. The performance evaluation involves careful construction of realistic datasets and the use of novel quality measures, revealing an improvement in efficiency with the alternative algorithm. The second part of the talk considers modifications to the model itself. Grouping information is incorporated to allow partial supervision of the clustering process, favouring more interpretable clusters. Further parameters are added to the model so that three-way data can be analysed, avoiding loss of information though collapsing complex datasets. These extensions will be illustrated through real data examples. Full details, including directions, are available as usual from the local group web site at http://www.stats.bris.ac.uk/~magka/RSSLocalGroup I hope to see some of you on Thursday. Graeme.
