Follows a message from the West Midland MREC Chair, Dr Jammi Rao

"The West-Midlands MREC is looking for a statistician with knowledge and
possibly experience of bio-statistics.

Particularly useful would be experience of the design of clinical trials, or
of the statistical review of trial protocols and/or research reports of
completed clinical trials. Specialised experience of this aspect of
clinical trial work is not mandatory but a keen interest in and
understanding of the issues is essential.

The Committee consists of lay as well as clinically qualified members whose
understanding of matters statistical may well be quite low. We are therefore
looking for a statistician who in addition to understanding the issues, can
also communicate them to other members and on some occasions to the
researchers who submit applications to the committee.

We also expect the statistician member to take part in the general
discussion of the ethics of research projects that come before us.

Membership of MREC is not remunerated but the committee's discussion is
often intellectually stimulating and the work schedule is challenging"

As ex-member of this committee, I can confirm that the meetings are indeed
interesting (for those with an interest in research ethics), and the time
commitment is of the order of 1 day per month (minimum - one could easily
spend two or three times this if without other things to do !). Meetings
are monthly in central Birmingham, travel expenses are paid, lunch provided,
and there are opportunities for funded training in relevant ethical matters.
