In co-operation with the Department of Economics it also offers a joint Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and Mathematical Sciences. In addition the Department is responsible for the teaching of the mathematics, statistics and mathematical education components of all other degree programmes in the University. The range of such instruction extends through mathematical methods, mathematics of computing, mathematical statistics, data analysis, operations research, numerical analysis, mathematical education and financial mathematics. There is also a substantial programme of postgraduate research leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. awards. This research covers a wide range of areas including fluid mechanics, geophysical fluid dynamics, industrial mathematics, non-linear mathematics, numerical analysis reliability, neural networks, mathematical education, Bayesian methods, spatial statistics, epidemiology and survival analysis. These positions are aimed to strengthen an already vibrant statistics group within the Department. The successful candidates will possess a record of published research and a clear commitment to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A doctorate is normally required together with lecturing and/or industrial experience.
