Subject: Re: Measures to Attract Disabled Staff

We at Kent have had the Double Tick for years, way before my time. I've
always tried to honour the commitments, and write to staff annually asking if
they have needs that are not being met - most year this elicits one or two
responses. We now have a Disability in Employment Policy. We find the most
important part of the double tick is the pledge to interview candidates who
reach essential criteria - it is very difficult to convince busy managers
that they should do this but we have a process and are very strict. I find
it opens up a huge discussion whenever I do my contribution to recruitment
training, and unearths a lot of misgivings and misunderstandings, not to
mention prejudice, so it's worth it from that respect!

I actually had a visit from Dept. of Work and Pensions last month (the first
ever) checking that we complied with the double tick, so I think that it is
getting higher on their agenda, and being taken seriously at last.
