I ,being her boss, would agree with all Ailene has said. All computer systems are hell to set up but in the end of the day iSOFT Apex does the job its paid to do.

While the iSOFT 'Apex' system is no better than any other Lab. Computer system, I think Trevor could probably improve his set-up.
We have been using this system for ~8 years but when we moved to Apex, we got them to incorporate an optional first screen on the 'AUTH' program (like the one we had on our old Ferranti system) which displays the results and comments on the last two samples with the same tests. We find this invaluable. As far as I know, it is an optional extra on this program. We have also set up several Tabulated Enquiry Codes' which are handy as they can be set to show different groups of tests over different timescales.

We have not had any problems with '<' and '>' - I don't understand this one.

We do not have order-comms. but do not have any difficulty 'adding-on' tests. (We just wish we had fewer such requests from our JHOs!) There are at least 4 different programs in which this can be done, including the ones used to authorise results, and we never get thrown out of the system doing this. I'm sure there is a way round the problem of different authorisation ranges for different methods. It may depend how you set up your system structure.

Talking to other users is invaluable, especially in the early stages, and we're always happy to show other people our system (not sure how far away you are, Trevor!) The User Group is also the best way to put some pressure on for developments, although if you are a new site and haven't paid all the money yet, you may still have some clout!

The User Group did indeed fall by the wayside a bit, partly because of illness of User Chairmen, but it is about to be resurrected under the guiding hand of Michael Edwards, with a meeting scheduled at Chesterfield Royal Hospital on 12th January 2005. There is also a Scottish User Group, currently chaired by Austen Kite from Aberdeen.

I have no vested interest in promoting the iSOFT system, but I feel it is sometimes over-criticised for deficiencies that are not inherent in the system but a feature of the many and varied ways it can be set up.
