Summary of responses It was recommended I use a specialist courier company (those mentioned include Momart, Hapag-Lloyd, Olympic Removals, C'arte and shipping agent Constantine) with the provision that it would be advisable for a member of staff to accompany the archives. The other option suggested was to take the material myself and book an extra seat on the plane for it. Expert help with packaging was mentioned several times, as was ensuring conservation help with condition checks both in the UK and at the destination. Several people suggested getting advice on the import and export laws and that by accompanying the material customs formalities would be more easily dealt with. The National Archives, who over time have gained considerable experience in this area, very helpfully sent me copies of their policy and procedure. As to the question of cost, this is dependant on the number and size of the items (whether hand carry or cargo) and the intended location in Australia. Many thanks to all who contacted me.
