IMAGES OF ASYLUM SEEKERS AND REFUGEES Date: Friday 12 March, 2004 Time: 09:30 – 18:00 (plus an evening reception) Venue: Menzies Room, The Institute of Commonwealth Studies, 28 Russell Square London, WC1B 5DS Supported by the Friends of the Institute Organised in collaboration with the Refugee Council. The ICS would like to thank the Information Centre about Asylum and Refugees (ICAR) for its help in planning the conference. This one-day conference will focus on images and representations of asylum seekers and refugees in the United Kingdom. It will address a range of representational forms, from the media to literature, film, photography, theatre and NGO work. Its objective is to examine critically various forms used by and for asylum seekers and refugees. This will be done by exploring issues such as ethical dilemmas, political challenges, creative opportunities and, more generally, how the terms of the debate on asylum seekers and refugees is being defined and contested in the public sphere.
