Donna, When dealing with such a situation it is important that HR realise that you are acting on behalf of the company, as well as the employee. The GP acts only for the employee and therefore can not provide specialist advice based on an in depth knowledge of their working environment and associated hazard/risk ratio's. Request for reports are wasted time and money if those requesting do not appreciate which questions to ask to recieve appropriate and helpful answers. Reports are based on factual information and there interpretation requires both medical and workplace knowledge which HR does not have.Although not aware of any specific precident I feel an Industrial Tribunal would look very dimley on non medical personnel basing opinions on Medical reports especially if they have access to a department that can give specific medical advice on 'Fitness to Work' in relation to medical diagnosis. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please remove this footer before replying.
