When we were presented with the same situation, we canceled our individual
subscriptions and did not have to spend much if any more on our share of the
expanded list. I think you will find that users will browse beyond their
disciplines when it is possible, so it is good to offer them the
opportunity. The Annual Reviews are nice summaries of the year's work, so
non-specialists in a particular field can update their understanding pretty
easily.

Subject: Annual Reviews

Dear All,
We would be interested to hear from other Libraries who have taken out
subscriptions to Annual Reviews online journals, in particular those
Universities who have subscriptions to individual AR titles online
rather than the package deal.

We have more than one campus here in Durham and are defined by this
publisher as multi site institution. We currently have a flexible mix of
individual print plus online and online only subscriptions in place.
These are currently each registered for online access at one or more of
our 'sites' on the basis of IP registrations. This arrangement sometimes
means we are in effect paying twice for a title but does mean we are
only paying for what is needed twice where it is needed.

Unfortunately, we now need to review this arrangement as changes are
being made to the way our network is set up which means it is
increasingly difficult for us to identify web traffic as belonging to a
particular Durham 'site' on the basis of IP address. All our traffic
goes through cache machines which disguise the home IP address of the
original request.

To date we have resisted going for the bulk deal on offer from AR which
would involve an increase in the number of times we were paying twice -
more expense and bundled content which we are not particularly
interested in.

Any information others are willing to share about their subscription
arrangements and technical set up with this publisher would be greatly
appreciated. Off list would be fine if preferred.

Many thanks
Jackie
