I am investigating a future requirement to sell a range of traditional
publications but also digital images online and the question of Distance
selling legislation raised its ugly head. I have found some useful
information on the DTI website at
http://www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/topics1/ecomm.htm but wondered whether those with
existing e-commerce systems had had any issues over this or a rough estimate
of the percentage of 'returns'?

I am especially thinking about online delivery of a digital image (eg a page
from the 1901 Census) - where the transaction is immediate but technically
the user has 7 days to cancel the 'contract' with the supplier then having
to refund the consumer within 30 days. Theoretically a user can order a
page, pay for it, read it, print it etc and then decide they do not want it
and demand a refund. This is the same as buying a suit wearing it for a
wedding and then returning it.

The legislation does allow for such cases where the service is delivered
before the 7 days begin but requires clearly informing the user that they do
not have a right to cancel for these services. If anybody has taken such an
approach could they point me in the right direction for examples of wording
/ phrasing etc.

I will update the list with a summary of replies received off-list.

best wishes
Simon
