You are warmly invited to participate in an ESRC seminar series organised by
the Centre for Research on Families and Relationships at the University of
Edinburgh, in conjunction with the Universities of Leeds, Keele and
Southampton.

Family and personal relationships are crucial to the quality of life and
health of individuals and the economic and social well being of society.
They are at the heart of key areas of government action, for example in
health, education, welfare and work, as well as within efforts to reduce
poverty and promote social inclusion. It is critical to have a detailed
understanding of trends in personal life-styles and personal relationship
formation and dissolution, and the likely outcomes of their interaction with
cultural, social and economic change. Information about non-familial as well
as familial relationships is required by policy makers and practitioners in
their work to improve social functioning and lessen social exclusion. While
there are a number of foci for dissemination and exchange in Britain that
are centrally concerned with social research on familial relationships,
non-familial personal relationships are relatively neglected. This seminar
series will redress the balance.
