Today (14. December) is the feast day of:
Spiridion (d. c. 348) Spiridion was a shepherd before
becoming bishop of Tremithus (Cyprus). He survived the Great
Persecution at the cost of an eye and some time in a copper mine.
He was a strong opponent of Arianism.
Nicasius of Rheims and companions (d. c. 407 or 451)
Nicasius was bishop of Rheims, killed in his cathedral along with his
sister Eutropia (a consecrated virgin) and a number of other people by
unidentified barbarians, probably either Vandals or Huns.
Agnellus of Naples (d. c. 596) One of the patrons of
Naples, Agnellus was a hermit who became abbot of the monastery of San
Gaudioso near the city. Legend says that he raised sieges of the
city by showing a banner emblazoned with a cross.
Venantius Fortunatus (d. 610) Venantius was from near
Treviso, Italy, but as an adult moved to Poitiers. He was a
friend of Queen St. Radegund and became bishop of Poitiers in c. 594.
He is known today as one of the most important Latin hymnographers,
composer of such greats as Vexilla Regis Prodeunt and Pange Lingua
Gloriosi.
Adalbero
II of Metz (d. 1005) Adalbero, educated at the monastery of
Gorze, became bishop of Metz in 984. He was especially noted for
his zeal in monastic reform.
Bartholomew Buonpedoni (d. 1300) (blessed) Bartholomew
moved from being a secular servant at a monastery in Pisa to be a
Franciscan tertiary and parish priest. He contracted leprosy,
and spent the last twenty years of his life ministering to fellow
lepers.
Bonaventure Buonacorsi (blessed) (d. 1313)
Bonaventure was a native of Pistoia, where he led the Ghibelline party
until converted to both the religious life and the pro-papal Guelfs at
the same time. B. became a Servite and a wandering preacher of
peace between the factions of Italy, winning the nickname "the
blessed."
