medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (8. December) is the feast day of:

Eucharius of Trier (3rd cent.?) Eucharius is the first known bishop
of Trier. As in so many cases, he probably lived in the third
century, but later legend loudly proclaimed sub-apostolic authority
for E., asserting that he had been sent to Trier by St. Peter.

Eutychian (d. 283) A bishop of Rome, apparently originally from
Tuscany. Tradition says Eutychian was martyred, but nothing more is
known of him.

Macarius the Alexandrian (d. 390) Macarius was a confectionary in
Alexandria before converting in c. 340. He became one of the great
fathers of the desert (at Nitria on the western edge of the Nile
delta). He was an extreme ascetic, too ascetic for Pachomius' monks
at Tabennesis, despite which he became superior of a hermit colony
near the delta.

Romaric (d. 653) A Merovingian courtier, Romaric became a monk under
St. Amatus at Luxeuil. R. founded the great double monastery later
named Remiremont (after him) on his estate, serving as its second
abbot.

Gunthild (d. c. 748) Gunthild was an Anglo-Saxon nun who went to
Germany at Boniface's request. There she became abbess of a convent
in Thuringia and also served as inspector of all the schools English
nuns founded in Germany.

Buzad Banfy (blessed) (d. 1241) Buzad Banfy was a Hungarian count
who became a Dominican. When the Mongols sacked Pest, BB was killed
in his church.
