hi

the current investment value of the National Trust SMR (NTSMR) is over 5
million ... this takes in the resource as a whole (all digital content
images, maps and text database) and is based on such things as the cost
of recreating that data at todays rates.

It is based on the Historic Landscape Surveys the trust undertakes on
its properties and does not include specialist derived data from such
things as excavation, geophysical data etc.

If you slice it by staff time it works out nearer 6 million ...

Subject: Quantification of amount of money spent so far on English
HER/SMR network

In completing my belated response to the HER Consultation I began to
wonder if it was possible to attempt a rough quantification of the
amount of money, at present- day costs, that had been spent on getting
the English HERs/SMRs to the state that they are in today, in order to
demonstrate that any additional money put into making them more
user-friendly and fit for a wider purpose is a drop in the ocean
compared to that already spent on getting to what where we are now. Has
anyone attempted such a quantification? My rough and ready calculations
were that the avearge HER/SMR would have been in existence for perhaps
25 years and would have had one dedicated officer whose annual salary at
todays prices with on costs would be say £30,000. Hence an average
HER/SMR might represent £750,000 worth of investment. I then reckoned
that there were around 60 reasonably-sized HERs which would give a total
investment of £45million. I have not counted UADs in order not to
over-egg the pudding. Has anyone any thoughts on this. Is it a
reasonable figure? Or is the calculation not worth attempting?

Regards,

Mike Shaw
