CALL FOR PAPERS

For a special issue of "Document numérique" (published in France)

"ARCHIVING AND SUSTAINABILITY"

The preservation and use of records and documents over time

Context

Digital archiving and preservation is a very important topic which is currently attracting a great deal attention. This is due to:
* the rapidly growing volumes of digital information which will be valuable for many years or decades: databases, web sites, administrative and scientific publications, surveys, contracts, images, e-mail...
* the increasing number of legal and technical references, for example electronic signature legislation, XML recommendations, French standard NF 42-013,
* recent standards, models and surveys explaining concepts and strategy, for example ISO 15489 (Records Management standard), Model requirements for the management of electronic records (MoReq, European Commission), OAIS Model (Open Archival Information System), Global Strategy for long term preservation of electronic records in Switzerland, and so on.
* important projects in private and public organizations for archiving and maintaining web sites, administrative or technical data etc.

Preservation over time presents a double challenge:
* to identify pertinent and coherent data objects to be preserved, that is data aggregates documenting events, actions or transactions, with correct metadata describing the context of creation, organized in such manner that they remain independent of any tool or system which may have a shorter life expectancy than the data object.
* to preserve those objects over time, despite or with the help of technological and societal evolutions, in a manner which preserves their accessibility to users.

Our Objective

"Document numérique" first published a special issue on the beginning of digital archiving two years ago. Given the progress since this issue, we now wish to assemble, in this new special issue, a large panel of contributions about projects, experiments, tools and methods, models, standards and proposals for future.
This call is directed to all who are facing the long term digital preservation issues: Records Managers and Archivists, computer specialists, Information Managers, Librarians, quality specialists, legal experts, and researchers.
