medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

St Martin's Day

The song sung by German children is  about St Martin's encounter with the
beggar and his subsequent act of charity.  It seems that the lamps are
carried to lighten the wintry night - thus suggesting some link with an
older tradition.
