                     15th – 16th September 2004

In the last decade, whilst many governments have turned a blind eye to
immigration issues in Europe, filmmakers have become increasingly interested in
exploring the migrant experience. Crossing Borders aims to explore the
cinematic representation of these issues in films made within the last five years and
to interpret the images and the narratives of the lives of the persons at the heart of
this subject.

Papers on the following themes are particularly welcome:

·   Cultural and national identities;
·   Deterritorialisation;
·   Representational continuity/discontinuity
·   Tradition versus modernity;
·   Gender aspects of immigration;
· Formal representational practices and issues of border crossings
·   Representations of crime and illegality;
·   Integration and alienation;
· The experiences of second and third generations

Proposals for twenty minute papers, to be delivered in English, should be
submitted in the form of a 300 word abstract by the 30th January, 2004. It is
hoped that selected essays will be published in a refereed monograph.

In association with the conference, a Crossing Borders film festival will be
running at the Cornerhouse Cinema in Manchester during autumn 2004.

The festival and conference have the support of the Instituto Cervantes, Goethe
Institut, Delegation Culturelle Française and the Italian Consulate.
