The first seminar in the series will be held at the European Research Insitute, the University of Birmingham on 5-6 December 2003 Best regards Moya Flynn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trans-National Issues, Local Concerns: Insights from Russia, Central and Eastern Europe and the UK The seminar series, funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council, is being led by a multi-disciplinary team of UK-based researchers: Jon Oldfield ([log in to unmask]), at the University of Birmingham, Adam Fagan ([log in to unmask]) and Adrian Smith ([log in to unmask]) at Queen Mary, University of London, Moya Flynn ([log in to unmask]) and Rebecca Kay ([log in to unmask]) at the University of Glasgow, and Tassilo Herrschel ([log in to unmask]) at the University of Westminster. The series will consist of five seminars, to take place over the period December 2003-October 2004, at the above mentioned universities. The first seminar is scheduled for 5th-6th December, 2003 at the European Research Institute, University of Birmingham. Contact the above for more details or go to the seminar series website at: http://www.gees.bham.ac.uk/research/transnational/ Background to the seminar series: Since the fall of socialist regimes in 1989/1991 considerable efforts have been made to understand the nature of the transformations taking place within Central Eastern Europe (CEE) and Russia. Across and within different disciplines, theoretical and empirical enquiry has developed to encourage a critical analysis of prevailing theories of 'transition' and to produce an alternative picture of the processes of 'change' taking place in the region. The seminar series hopes to build on and advance these efforts, which have challenged rigid understandings of 'change', by drawing on the knowledge of, and facilitating interaction between, interested academics and practitioners from the UK, CEE and Russia. Aim of the seminar series: The overall aim of the series is to encourage new perspectives on understanding change in the countries of CEE and Russia. The series will engage academics, practitioners and policy makers in an active exploration of the everyday practices and lived realities of individuals and communities both within the CEE/Russia region, and beyond. Through such an exploration, the series will move away from debates over the characteristics of post-communist 'transition'. Instead, it will seek an alternative theoretical and practical approach that focuses attention on the nature of 'transnational' commonality and difference between locally situated realities, rather than prioritising the 'uniqueness' of the CEE/Russian experience. The series is organised around 3 main themes: contemporary aspects of social, economic and environmental change. Intended outcomes of the series: The seminar series will provide a unique multidisciplinary and international forum, which will bring together individuals working on similar issues but in different local/national contexts and from various academic and professional backgrounds. The organisers envisage that such a forum will produce a range of short and long-term academic and practical outputs including: policy documents, academic papers, & the establishment of collaborative networks incorporating both academics and practitioners from East and West. ________________End of message______________________ Archives and tools for the Qual-FSU Discussion List are now located at: www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/qual-fsu.html You can JOIN or LEAVE the list from this web page.
