Unfortunately they face a number of problems. There are increasing UK graduates, who obviously it would be a waste of money spending money training them for them to be unemployed. There are also an excess number of applicants for most available HST specialties, especially in surgery, and medicine. The other difficulty is the problem to obtain UK "experience" without which it is difficult to get a 1st post. This leads to overseas doctors literally blanket applying to many UK posts, with their resultant CV's and job applications not targeted to the post they applied for. This year I helped shortlist for a 6 week locum post in A&E. We had around 90 applicants mostly overseas, it is extremely difficult to differentiate between the candidates, and hence much easier to shortlist based on relevant UK experience. -----Original Message----- From: Accident and Emergency Academic List [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of muhammad imran Sent: 14 November 2003 19:37 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Fw: Foreign doctors after PLAB Respected Dr. McGeehan, I am really impressed by the concern and thoughts from your side regarding the matter of joblessness of foreign doctors from subcontinent. You rightly mentioned that these doctor had been backbone of NHS and after higher specialist training along British techniques many went back to home and now infact working as Professors in many teaching hospitals in their home country. I dont understand why the policies are not being made or why the concerned authorities are not addressing the matter of joblessness of foreign doctors keeping in mind that NHS is still short of doctors. It is not good for NHS itself and these hightly ambitious and talented doctors who through out their medical education in medical school study hard and logically keeping in mind the format of PLAB exams and system of NHS working. If the opportunity be provided to them, I am sure the problem of NHS will reduce to less then half. Britain has long history to serve humanity in every aspect of life and I again expect that tradition to be revived again and I hope these foreign doctors will be given some sort of releif and they themselves will later on be able to give releif to the ailing humanity. I request all the seniors doctors and respected Professors working in NHS system to step up and contribute positively towards this very important issue. There is a long tradition of exchange between the UK and the Indian and as well as other medical schools in the former Commonwealth. >I'm using the term India as the country before partition and including present, India, Pakistan Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. I certainly do not wish to cause political offence to anyone. >Communications were good and a steady stream of highly motivated young Doctors came to the UK for higher professional Training. They were the backbone of the NHS. They were trained along the British techniques. Many went back home and became Seniors in their own countrys. >I was having this conversation with a colleague today and I totally agree with Ray McGlone it is appalling. The NHS is crying out for Doctors and yet there are hundreds of highly committed young medical practitioners who are caught in a limbo. >Best wishes >DFM > >----------------------------------------- >Email provided by http://www.ntlhome.com/ > _____ MSN 8 helps ELIMINATE E-MAIL VIRUSES. <http://g.msn.com/8HMAEN/2743??PS=> Get 2 months FREE*.
