medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (30. October) is the feast day of:

Artemas of Lystra (1st cent.) Artemas was one of Paul's first converts; he
appears in Titus 3:12). Legend says A. was the first bishop of Lystra in
Asia Minor.

Marcellus of Tangier (d. 298) Marcellus was a centurian who refused to
celebrate the emperor's birthday because this involved making a sacrifice.
Instead, he declared himself a Christian, whereupon he was tried and
executed. We still have the genuine acta of his martyrdom; the notary in
the case, St. Cassian, refused to write an official report for the court
and was also martyred. Leon, Spain now claims his relics, and Spanish
legend tells that M. was the father of twelve other martyrs.

Asterius of Amasea (d. c. 400) Bishop of Amasea in Pontus (Asia Minor),
Asterius was a famous preacher. Some of his homilies are still extant.

Talaricon (6th cent.?) Legend tells that Talaricon was a Pictish
missionary bishop who had been consecrated by Pope Gregory the Great for
this task. Several Scottish churches are dedicated to him.

Ethelnoth the Good (d. 1038) Ethelnoth was a monk of Glastonbury and
archbishop of Canterbury from 1020 on.

Ida of Leeuw (blessed) (d. c. 1260) Ida's cult isn't confirmed, but she's
venerated in Belgium. She was a Cistercian nun at La Ramee in Brabant,
where she became a famous mystic.

Benvenuta Bojani (blessed) (d. 1292) Benvenuta was born to a noble family
of Cividale, the seventh of seven dauthers. She became a Dominican
tertiary at a young age and spent her life in severe penitential practices
in her parents' home, even doing the housework (!) She was a noted miracle
worker.

Dorothy of Montau (d. 1394) A Prussian peasant girl, Dorothy married a
prosperous swordsmith of Gdansk. They had nine children, and D. gradually
turned her husband into a nice guy through her patience and prayer. After
she was widowed, D. became a hermit at Kwidzyn.
