Digital Technology & Heritage: New Challenges. Friday 12 December 2003
A symposium on the application of information and communications
technology in the heritage industry. The University of Bath in Swindon,
Oakfield Campus.

A symposium organised by The University of Bath in Swindon on the
application of information and communications technology to the cultural
and scientific heritage sector.
This symposium will bring practitioners and researchers from many
disciplines together in order to consider how technological developments
relating to cultural heritage will impact on the heritage arena and how
users and researchers may plan for the future.
The aim of the conference is to inform participants of current best
practice and to identify areas of potential research which will lead to
the next generation of applications. Topics covered include:
archaeological survey techniques; applications of computer graphics; CD
and web-based applications relating to the built environment;
interactive techniques for the analysis, archiving, publication,
creation and dissemination of information and representation of cultural
heritage; and high fidelity archaeological site reconstructions.

There will be ample opportunity for discussion and debate on enhancing
access to digital resources for cultural and scientific heritage in
order to explore the possibilities for increased co-operation between
cultural and scientific content holders. The symposium will also
encourage convergence in technical approaches and applications for
cultural institutions and networked services critical to managing,
preserving and delivering digital cultural and scientific content.

PROGRAMME

10.00 Registration

10.15 Welcome & Introduction to Session One
Chair: Professor Alan Day, Dean of Engineering &
Design, University of Bath

10.30 Predicting the Past; Remembering the Future
Professor Tom Maver, ABACUS, University of Strathclyde
This presentation draws on the work of the research group ABACUS at the
University of Strathclyde to demonstrate and discuss a wide range of CD
and web-based applications relating to the built environment. The
presentation will include multimedia documents on the neolithic village
of Skara Brae, the world heritage site at New Lanark and the ever
changing city of Glasgow.

11.15 Coffee

11.30 Web Audience Profiling and Usability Testing
Kate Steiner, Head of Audience Research, Science Museum
This presentation will look at the Science Museum's methods for
establishing the demographic and psychographic profile of their virtual
visitors, and will discuss the guidelines that have been developed for
usability testing throughout the development of Web products and
exhibitions.

12.00 Surveying on the Edge
Dr Paul Bryan, Head of Photogrammetric Unit, English
Heritage
This presentation will discuss the metric survey work currently
undertaken by English Heritage and how computer technology has
contributed to this. Metric survey encompasses the full range of survey
processes, from 'simple' hand survey right up to 'cutting-edge'
technology such as photogrammetry and 3D laser scanning.

12.30 Discussion

13.00 LUNCH

13.45 Session Two
Chair: Professor Peter Johnson, Department of Computer
Science, University of Bath

13.50 High Fidelity Archaeological Site Reconstructions
Dr Alan Chalmers, Reader in Computer Science, University of
Bristol
Recent developments in computer visualisation are providing
powerful tools for modelling multi-dimensional aspects of data gathered
by archaeologists. However, if we are to avoid misleading impressions
of a site, then the computer generated environments should not only look
'real', but must simulate very accurately all the physical evidence that
is available.

14.30 Standards and Stuff: Creating and Disseminating
Information
Dr Matthew Stiff, Data Services Manager, National Monuments
Record
This presentation will look at the ways in which the Data Standards Unit
of English Heritage is working to address internal needs, as well as the
broader requirements of the Historic-Environment sector it supports. In
particular, it will introduce initiatives such as the CIDOC Conceptual
Reference Model and the challenges associated with disseminating
information to users in an online environment.

15.00 TEA

15.15 Lundy Island: the (rocky) road to an Integrated Digital Resource
Jason Siddall, National Trust Sites & Monuments Record
This presentation will discuss how the National Trust carried out an
archaeological survey of Lundy Island and then made that information
available digitally. The problems encountered and the lessons learned
will be described and the issue of whether it is really worth creating
such a resource will be discussed.

15.45 Conclusions

16.00 Close
