medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Bangor, Carnarvonshire (634 _Benchoer_).

This reference is to The Annals of Ulster:
sub anno 632(2) _Combustio Bennchoir Moer in Britannia_
I shouldn't try to do these things from memory!

It could be argued that this is a Gaelic rendering of a British name (the AU for this period were probably from a set compiled at Iona); however, put together with the unconvincing etymology for W._bangor_, and the place-name distributions and associations, I think the case for an import or loan is still viable.
