medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Unless one seriously believes that either the intrinsic merit or the historical interest of a body of ideas is determined by the relative number of its adherents, it may be misleading to restrict consideration of happiness in the Middle Ages purely to discussions that take place within the context of Latin Christianity, as uninformed readers could conclude from this that medieval Islam, Judaism, and Orthodox Christianity had nothing to offer on this topic. If there is more to medieval Latin theology and philosophy than Thomas Aquinas, there is also more to medieval theology and philosophy than its Latin Christian manifestations.

For medieval Greek literature on happiness, something your hellenist friend should not find too difficult to deal with, see Georges Arabatzis, _Éthique du bonheur et orthodoxie à Byzance (IVe-XIIe siècles)_ (Paris: Association Pierre Belon, 1998; Textes, Documents, Études sur le monde byzantin néohellénique et balkanique, no. 4).

Best,
John Dillon
