medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Today (17. August) is the feast day of: Myron of Cyzicus (d. c. 250) The brave but perhaps foolhardy Myron was a priest of Cyzicus on the Sea of Marmara. He confronted some imperial officers sent to destroy his church, and didn't survive the experience. Mamas (d. c. 275) Mamas was a shepherd of Caesarea (Cappodocia). He was martyred in Arelian's reign, and his cult became popular in the eastern church. Eusebius (d. 310) Eusebius was a Greek who served as pope for a few months when Rome was torn apart over the question of whether apostates could be reconciled to the church. He died in exile in Sicily. Amor of Amorbach (8th cent.) A companion of St. Pirmin in his missionary work in Germany, Amor founded the monastery of Amorbach. Carloman (d. 755) The younger brother of the Frankish mayor of the palace/king Pepin the Short, Carloman was co-ruler for a few years after their father's death. While in office, he was an enthusiastic monastery-founder and supporter of St. Boniface. He abdicated from his co-mayorship in 747, became a monk, and finally settled at Montecassino, where legend tells he worked in the kitchen. He was sent to mediate between Pepin the Lombards, but died on the way. Clare of Montefalco (d. 1308) Clare became a Franciscan tertiary, but later became abbess of the Augustinian nunnery founded by her sister. Clare was a famous mystic, especially devoted to the passion (after her death, her heart was examined and the instruments of the passion were found on it (or at least something the eye of faith could make out to be the instruments of the passion)). C. was canonized in 1881. Dr. Phyllis Jestice __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
