medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Today (14. August) is the feast day of:

Marcellus of Apamea (d. 389) Marcellus was governor
 of Cyprus before he
became bishop of Apamea, Syria. He had the
 unenviable task of enforcing
Theodosius I's anti-paganism decrees, to the outrage
 of his unwilling
flock. When he was overseeing the burning of the
 temple at Aulona, the
infuriated crowd threw him into the flames.

Fachanan of Ross (late 6th cent.) Fachanan is
 credited as first bishop of
Ross in Co. Cork, Ireland. He founded a monastic
 school.

Everard of Einsiedeln (d. 958) Everard was a member
 of the ducal family of
Swabia. He was provost of Strassburg cathedral, but
 in 934 joined his
friend Berno at B's new monastery of Einsiedeln
 (Switzerland). When Berno
died, E. took over as first abbot, finishing
 construction of the monastery.

Antonio Primaldo and companions (blessed) (d. 1480)
 The Ottomans captured
the city of Otranto (Italy) in 1480 and the
 inhabitants were given a choice
of conversion or death. The elderly artisan Antonio
 rallied the people
with such good effect that 800 citizens chose death
 and were executed
(along with their bishop) in the cathedral.
