Loughborough University is currently working in partnership with Co-East on
a feasibility
study for developing usage models for web-based and hardware-based
electronic books (e-books)
in public libraries, based on a study of e-book implementation and usage in
Essex libraries
over a 12-month period. The project team's first quarter report has just
been produced and
is available to read at
http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/ls/disresearch/e-booksinpublib/news.html

This work is being supported by an award from the Laser Foundation - further
details about the
work of the Foundation are at: http://www.bl.uk/concord/laser-about.html.

The project aims to develop and evaluate e-book collections for public
library use, produce
recommendations regarding the adoption, management and development of such
collections, consider
the implications of the introduction of e-books to public library services,
as well as ascertain
the relative merits of three e-book formats. The project will also raise
awareness of the issues
concerning e-books within the digital library environment. The results will
be of interest to
public librarians, publishers and service providers both in the UK and
abroad and will be disseminated widely.
