Please see below adverts for two postgraduate ESRC CASE studentships in the Centre for Urban and Regional Development Studies, School of Geography, Politics and Sociology, University of Newcastle, UK. If interested, please use the contacts listed below.

1. Developing Northumberland's Natural Heritage Cluster: Potentials, Problems and Pitfalls

In partnership with Learning and Skills Council Northumberland, CURDS has been awarded a CASE studentship to monitor, investigate, analyse and evaluate policy initiatives on Northumberland's Natural Heritage Cluster. The Natural Heritage Cluster is identified in the Northumberland Strategic Partnership document and comprises a number of sectors (agriculture, food, crafts, heritage and tourism). Its significance stems from its combination of a variety of local growth sectors and the active creation of a regional brand and identity for one of the most peripheral areas within the United Kingdom. The main research methods will comprise collection of a variety of documentation on the cluster, repeat interviewing of key informants, and the analysis of other 'good practice' case studies.

The basic ESRC stipend for October 2003 of £9000 per annum will be supplemented by a stipend enhancement of £3000 per annum from the sponsor. A further £2000 per annum is provided for research expenses.

The co-supervisors of the Studentship are:

2. Laggard or Learning Region? Northumberland and the North East of England

In partnership with Learning and Skills Council Northumberland, CURDS has been awarded a CASE studentship to investigate, analyse and evaluate the concept of the 'learning region' and its application within the North East of England (with particular focus on Northumberland). As the UK government moves forward its vision of the knowledge-driven economy, the role of learning in society has moved to centre-stage. Learning regions exemplify new programmes of regional development combining (a knowledge-driven) industrial policy with a new regional policy. The main research methods will comprise identification and collection of a variety of documentation on, and evidence for, the learning region, interviewing of key informants, and the analysis of other 'good practice' case studies.

The basic ESRC stipend for October 2003 of £9000 per annum will be supplemented by a stipend enhancement of £3000 per annum from the sponsor. A further £2000 per annum is provided for research expenses.

The co-supervisors of the Studentship are:
